Sugar farmers from across the world gathered in
Belize to exchange knowledge and best practice, marking an important step in
strengthening Fairtrade relationships across borders.
Fairtrade farmers
from Belize, Cuba, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Guyana, Paraguay, Mauritius and Fiji
attended the meeting, which was organized by the CLAC sugar network and
Fairtrade International’s GPM and PSR teams.

Farmers broke into groups to analyse common
challenges and look at how they can take more control over their future.
Particular focus was on how to prepare for the new competitive environment when
EU quotas for beet sugar and isoglucose are removed in 2017, potentially leading
to a reduction in sugar imports to Europe.
We agreed sugar specific
indicators to help measure and demonstrate impact, lower costs of production and
achieve greater efficiency. We will start tracking these immediately, with
support from the producer networks. |
